The Curse of the Takers

What if a single spell could change an entire city?
For The Curse of the Takers, we stepped into the fictional city of Uz – a place where magic can reshape not only its people, but the world around them. Our task was to bring this ever-changing story to life through a combination of expressive frame-by-frame animation and dynamic motion design. From hand-drawn characters and atmospheric environments to fluid transitions and carefully crafted movement, every scene was designed to reflect the latest transformation of Uz. The result is a visually rich journey through a city where nothing stays the same for long.

Challenge

The main challenge was to create a visual language that could keep up with a story built around constant transformation. As different spells take effect, the city of Uz changes its mood, appearance, and rhythm – meaning each part of the story needed to feel distinct while still belonging to the same world. We also needed to find the right balance between the handcrafted character of frame-by-frame animation and the flexibility and pace of motion design. The animation had to feel expressive and organic, while allowing the story to move smoothly between different spells, characters, and versions of the city.

Solution

We combined frame-by-frame animation with motion design to give Uz a world that could constantly transform while retaining its unique visual identity. Hand-drawn animation brought personality and emotion to the characters, while motion techniques helped us build fluid transitions, dynamic compositions, and seamless changes between scenes. We paid special attention to the moments when one version of Uz turns into another, using movement as part of the storytelling rather than simply as a way to animate the visuals. From character animation and environmental details to transitions and compositing, each element was crafted to make the magical transformations feel natural and engaging. By bringing these techniques together, we created a visual experience that feels both handcrafted and dynamic, just like the ever-changing city at the heart of the story.

Uz may be a city of spells, but the real magic was in making it constantly change before our eyesCombining frame-by-frame animation with motion design allowed us to explore different moods, rhythms, and visual worlds within a single story. Each transformation became an opportunity to experiment with movement and bring another side of Uz to life. The final result is a playful, atmospheric animation where every spell leaves its mark — and every frame helps tell the story.
